Jawaharlal Nehru University Vice-Chancellor M Jagadesh Kumar has appealed to "all" political parties to not "interfere" in the matters of university, which is caught in a row over an event against the hanging of Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru, and asserted that the varsity is "capable" of dealing with issues internally
The four-member fact-finding committee recommended Vice Chancellor M Jagadesh Kumar be dismissed and criminal investigation initiated against him. It also demanded a complete rollback of the JNU fee hike.
The meeting was attended by the JNU registrar, proctor and other admin officials who briefed the MHRD officials about the incident. Union HRD Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal 'Nishank' has vowed 'strong action' against the perpetrators of the violence at JNU.
Amid growing demands for his resignation, Kumar told the MHRD officials that efforts were being made to facilitate semester registration for 'willing' students.
Anant Prakash, one of the five students accused in the Jawaharlal Nehru University controversy, on Monday demanded University Vice-Chancellor Mamidala Jagadesh Kumar take a 'courageous stand' and ensure that all charges against them are dropped.
The JNUSU holds the Vice-Chancellor responsible for the violence. "He is using henchmen to perpetrate violence on students and vandalise the university," said JNUSU. "The JNU community has a single point of demand. That either this VC resign or the human resource development ministry as the competent authority remove him! Those who are trying to malign and destroy this university will not succeed," demanded JNUSU.
A student rejected the allegation and said they were allegedly manhandled by the security personnel.
Protests were held in many cities across the country. So far, no one has been arrested for the attack on students and teachers at JNU even as clamour for resignation of the V-C grew.
The protests, which started in the morning, is part of the agitation against the hostel manual and several other issues like restrictions by the administration on entry to the Parthasarathy Rocks, attempts to lock students' union office, according to the students.
